Cuba

Once a wealthy Caribbean trading centre and smuggling hub, Cuba has endured a long history of mixed and ever changing fortunes. Today, Cuba is an enchanting, lively and spirited place. History is everywhere, from Hispanic mansions to colonial towns where 1950’s cars don’t seem out of place. Away from the cities you can laze on divine beaches, visit plantations and explore this scenic island. The Cubans are lively, creative, fun and musically talented and the nightlife here is legendary.

Our Thoughts

Cuba has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean especially around Varadero, with 12 ½ miles of beautiful white sand. Although Cuba produces quantities of fresh produce and is surrounded by the sea, it has yet to develop into a gastronome’s paradise. The markets are the best places for snacks such as pan con puerco (pork sandwiches) and frituras (deep fried snacks). There are practically no shopping centres in the main cities but do look out for rum and Cuban cigars, which are the most popular souvenirs to buy. All cash transactions within Cuba must be made in Cuban Convertible Pesos (CCP’s) only. Euros can be exchanged for CCP’s at numerous locations and no commission charges apply. It is not advisable to bring US dollars, as high commission rates will apply for any exchange into CCP’s. Most major credit cards are acceptable in Cuba and VISA is the most widely accepted. Do not bring US dollar Travellers Cheques or try to use American Express or Diners Card as neither will be accepted. Note: It is NOT possible to use MBNA VISA card in Cuba.
