Egypt
The great historian and traveller, Herodotus, wrote of Egypt in the 5th Century BC ‘Nowhere in the world are there so many marvellous things of unspeakable greatness’. In the twenty five centuries separating Herodotus from us nothing has happened to diminish or even qualify his judgement. Egypt is described as the ‘gift of the Nile’ and continues to capture the imagination of all who visit it with its awe inspiring monuments, temples, tombs, pyramids, monasteries and mosques. Spreading over five millennia, Egypt is referred as being the mother of all civilisations as it is steeped in history and evokes memories of a glorious past. The attractions of this beautifully diverse country lie in it′s cultural uniqueness, incredible natural beauty of rugged mountains, deserts, superb beaches, world renowned coral reefs and of course the overwhelming hospitality of the Egyptian people. Arabic is the national language however tourists will rarely face a communication problem as Egyptians speak a number of languages including English, French, German and Italian. Egypt enjoys a dry sunny climate. However, temperatures increase as you travel due south. Cairo can be chilly between December and February and very hot between June and September but the heat in Egypt is made bearable by the northerly breeze that leads to a drop in temperature at night. Peak temperatures in upper Egypt occur between May and October and are accompanied by extremely low humidity. The best way to deal with Egypt's summers is to dress in light cotton clothes. Egypt does tend to get cold in the evenings particularly in winter so a light sweater or woollens may be needed. For all seasons light walking shoes, headwear, sunglasses and sunscreen are absolute necessities. As a mark of respect, conservative attire should be adhered to when outside of beach resorts and when visiting cultural tourist attractions.
