DESTINATIONS

Bordered by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on a peninsula jutting out into the Arabian Gulf, Qatar is a modern country of flat, desert terrain dotted with many interesting natural features. Doha, the capital, offers a rich mixture of authentic Arabian and ultra modern architecture. The north of the city contains most of the historical sites, while the best beaches are on the west coast at Umm Bab. This sun-kissed country is filled with possibilities – desert escapades, shopping extravaganzas, natural attractions, water sports, state-of-the-art sporting facilities and historical museums all combined with fine dining, Qatar’s diverse population has spawned an excellent array of restaurants offering Asian, European and Middle Eastern cuisine and luxurious accommodations. Welcome to the heart of the Arabian Gulf.
Doha has grown rapidly from a small fishing and pearling village, to a thriving community with a population of almost 700 000. Tourism has increased considerably over the last few years and new developments can be seen all over the capital, including ‘Palm Tree Island’, a man-made island which will host luxury hotels and residences. Islam - both Sunni and Shia - is the only religion practised in Qatar and visitors are expected to observe modest dress. Bikinis and shorts should be reserved only for hotel beaches and swimming pools. There are numerous excursions available including 4 wheel drive dune safaris and golf at the Doha Golf Club. Ramadan is strictly observed for one month commencing either September 23rd or 24th 2006 (exact date to be announced). During this period Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, with no food, drink or cigarettes being allowed to pass their lips and some hotel restaurants are closed.
Journey times from the airport to Doha hotels are subject to prevailing traffic conditions. Approximate transfer time is shown in the hotel description text.
