This malaria-free ‘Big Five’ private game reserve is set in the Kariega River Valley and is a natural extension to the Garden Route. In addition to game viewing from open vehicles, Kariega offers safe walking close to the game and other activities include river cruises, canoeing and mountain biking. Kariega prides itself in the abundance of general game, birdlife and wonderful sightings of lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, hippo, giraffe and zebra.

Kariega Lodge comprises spacious and comfortable log chalets. Fine traditional meals are provided in the restaurant or boma, which expertly integrates with nature and the environment. All 19 chalets are air-conditioned and have private viewing decks, with some having private pools (available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis at no extra charge). Other facilities include telephone, tea and coffee facilities and bath/shower.

Ukhozi Lodge

The exclusive Ukhozi Lodge boasts unique African-style lounges, a restaurant, a boma and an outdoor pool. All 10 luxury suites are air-conditioned with telephone, tea and coffee facilities, bath/shower, each with private plunge pool and are crafted from log, offering panoramic views from private decks. Note: Ukhozi Lodge is not open to children under 10 years.

River Lodge
Five star rating

River Lodge is a magnificent Lodge built on the banks of the Bushmans River. The Lodge, which overhangs the river, offers exclusivity, comfort and spectacular views. Unique features include an outdoor heated pool as well as excellent river fishing and crabbing. All 10 superbly appointed spacious, thatched suites are air-conditioned with telephone, ceiling fan, minibar, bath/shower and balcony. Note: River Lodge is not open to children 10 years and under.

How to get there

Kariega is only an 80-minute drive from Port Elizabeth airport making it ideal for those driving the Garden Route. Private transfers can be arranged from Port Elizabeth to and from Kariega. 01 Jan to 30 Sep. The return cost is approximately €135 per person. 01Oct to 31 Dec. The return cost is approximately €145 per person.
